Nanette Donohue Elected to American Library Association Council

Champaign Public Library's Nanette Donohue was elected to the American Library Association (ALA) Council. Her three-year term as councilor-at-large starts July 16.  The Council is the top governing body for ALA, the world's oldest and largest library association. As the library's technical services manager, Donohue manages the cataloging, preparation, and inventory control of all library materials. She joined the library staff in 2003.

Mike Rogalla Named to Notable Children's Books Committee

Champaign Public Library children's librarian Mike Rogalla has been chosen to serve a two-year term on the American Library Association's Notable Children's Books Committee.  Rogalla and 10 other selectors from across the country are charged with identifying the best books published in the U.S. this year and next, for children up to age 14.  So far, Rogalla has received about 700 books from publishers seeking notable status for their titles. He expects about 1,800 by the end of the year. All will be added to the library's collection. Committee members review and nominate titles throughout the year; about 60 to 80 books will make the final list. Rogalla has been with the library since 1993.

Kids go to the Wild Side at Homer Library

Stacey Clementz shows participants in the Homer Library Reading program a box turtle. Clementz brought animals to the library on June 8 to show the children. Clementz visit was to kick off the library's reading program. The program is open to all children entering kindergarten through fifth grade.

Craft Time at St. Joseph Library

A boy puts the finishing touches on a popsicle picture frame during craft time at the St. Joseph Township-Swearingen Memorial Library on June 23rd. Children made Father's Day presents. The library will offer craft time again on July 7th at 10:00 a.m.

Explore Downloads: Digital Bookmobile Visiting Champaign on National Tour

Lincoln Trail Libraries System patrons can explore downloadable audiobooks and other resources from My Media Mall when the national tour of the Digital Bookmobile stops in Champaign.  The Digital Bookmobile will be in front of the Champaign Public Library at 200 W. Green St. on Friday, July 17, from 12 to 6 pm. 

Champaign Public Recognized

The Champaign Public Library was recognized in the Alliance Library System's 2009 Watch List.  The list includes 18 public libraries identified by ALS as the "best of the best".   Champaign was cited for receiving a 3-star rating from Library Journal in 2009 as well as innovative services such as their Live Homework Help and online monthly newsletters.

Lincoln in American Memory Reading and Discussion Programs coming in July

With the generous support of the National Endowment for the Humanities, The Library of America has awarded free Lincoln in American Memory Readers to Marshall Public Library to facilitate public programming.  Each Thursday evening in July, the library will host discussions about this excellent series of booklets.  Participants will have the opportunity to read and discuss one of five 48-page booklets on different aspects of Abraham Lincoln’s life at each of the programs. Discussions will be led by volunteers from the community.  Register to attend the discussions and check out a Lincoln in American Memory Reader prior to the corresponding discussion.  Booklets are limited, so please register early.  The schedule is as follows:

Free Computer Classes at Marshall Public Library

Marshall Public Library, 612 Archer Avenue, Marshall, has scheduled free computer classes through September. Because of space limitations, persons interested in attending a class are asked to come to the library and pay a $10 cash deposit to reserve a place in each of the classes.  The deposit will be returned when the class is attended.  Deposits may be refunded if cancellations are made three or more days in advance.  Please call the library at (217) 826-2535 for more information.

Danville Library Announces Teen Movie, WII Gaming Sessions for July

Teens are invited to a screening of the movie “Transformers” on Wednesday, July 8, beginning at 2 p.m. at the Danville Public Library.   The free program will be held in the first floor Meeting Room.  Teens attending the July 8 screening will select the movie for August 5.   Public performance rights for the film are being made possible through a grant from the Danville  Library Foundation.

A Wii gaming session for teens will be held on  July 15, beginning at 2 p.m., in the first floor meeting room.

There is no cost to participate in either program, and all teens are welcome.  Registration is not required.  Free food and beverages will be provided.

Registration Open For Craft Session July 7th at Danville Library

The Danville Public Library Children’s Department is taking registrations for its “Make and Take a Saddlebag” craft session.  The session, for ages 6 through 12, will be conducted by Anita Ingram on Tuesday, July 7, beginning at 11 a.m. at the library.  There is no charge to participate but seating is limited, so children should sign up by stopping by the Children’s Department or calling them at (217) 477-5225.
