An interview with Director, Sandra Wienke.
| What is unique about your library?
|
The current library building was built with a one-of-a-kind grant from the Secretary of State and State Librarian's office after a tornado destroyed the library in 1996.
What are the primary goals and objectives of your library?
The number one goal for us is to provide patrons with the materials they want. We also strive to keep up with the standards set by the bigger libraries.
What cooperative efforts are you currently doing?
We partner with Lincoln Trail so that our patrons can have more access to the materials they want. Lately, we’ve been doing a lot of resource sharing through OCLC’s First Search. It hasn’t all been our patrons requesting information, we’ve fulfilled a number of requests for materials going out. We have an extensive collection of craft books thanks to a donation and they have been going out a lot.
Tell us a story about your library.
Once a patron came into the library who was quadriplegic. I helped her to get a library card and told her about My Media Mall. I actually went to her house and helped her download the software and showed her how to use it. We are always willing to help patrons out who can’t come to the library or need help. I often deliver books to avid readers who are in the hospital.
If money were no object, what services would you add?
Hands down, I would add more staff and more open hours. The library is currently only open 17 hours a week. With more money I could hire staff to work more library hours, computer staff to keep up the computers and run programs with computers. I could actually have a technical service staff, instead of volunteers. Adding hours and people would let me add a lot more programming.
What is popular in your library?
Computers, computers, computers. We have 7 computers and they are always being used. At the beginning of the summer it was mostly kids, but now we’re seeing a mix of children and adult users. I wish I could offer more computer programming, but there just isn’t time.
How does your library use online tools to connect to your users?
We have a website. I just started a blog too. It began as part of the summer reading program to let the kids know what was coming next. I am definitely going to keep on blogging the library’s news and information.
