An interview with Director, Jerry DeWitt.
| What is unique about your library?
|
The most unique thing about the Carle Foundation Hospital Library is our bio-medical literature. We have materials that cannot be found anywhere else in the area.
What are the primary goals and objectives of your library?
Right now, our goal is to reduce the size of the print collection and add more electronic resources and computer terminals.
What cooperative efforts are you currently doing?
Our main cooperation efforts are with other hospital libraries and the Health Services Library at University of Illinois. We get and share information with these libraries in order to better serve the larger community.
Tell us a story about your library.
A patron once entered the library to ask for information on a procedure that he was going to have. The patron kept asking if there was a video about the procedure. After 15 or 20 minutes working with the patron, CFHL discovered that the patron couldn't read. After that was figured out, the patient education nurse and librarian worked together to help the patron, and eventually found him the information in a way that he could understand.
If money were no object, what services would you add?
We would first move the library to another floor in order to get away from structural problems in the current location. In that new location we would add 6-8 more computer terminals and reduce the print collection. We would also put money to help facilitate cooperation with the public libraries.
What is popular in your library?
There really isn't one journal or book that is more popular than the other. The most popular service is just the plain old library service. Our community is just glad to have a librarian to call or a library to visit.
How does your library use online tools to connect to your users?
We do not use online tools, because everything has to go through the hospital I.T. department and we have intranet only access.
