The Danville Public Library Book Club will discuss Henry James’ classic novel “Washington Square” at its monthly meeting on Thursday, August 27, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the second floor Conference Room of the library. New readers are always welcome.
Copies of the book may be borrowed through the library’s interlibrary loan service for free or may be purchased at the Checkout Desk of the library through an arrangement with the Village Mall Waldenbooks.
“Washington Square” is the story of a “sweet but dull” daughter of a domineering father who is wooed by a fortune hunter in nineteenth century New York City. It was published in 1880. The 1949 film version of the book, which was titled “The Heiress,” will be shown at the library on Monday, September 14 beginning at 6:30 p.m., as the fifth in the “Great Books to Great Films” series sponsored by the library and the Danville Library Foundation. The film was directed by William Wyler and stars Olivia de Havilland, Montgomery Clift, Ralph Richardson, and Miriam Hopkins.
