An interview with Librarian, Greg Novak.
| What is unique about your library?
|
Next to the University of Illinois, the Regional Office of Education Learning Resource Library is the largest library for professional educators in East Central Illinois. The library services professionals in Ford, Champaign and Vermillion counties. There is a satellite branch of the library in Danville to help provide access to materials.
What are the primary goals and objectives of your library?
Our goal is to make sure that the educators in East Central Illinois have access to and receive the materials that they need to help them in their profession.
What cooperative efforts are you currently doing?
About 90% of our circulation is through LTLS and interlibrary loan. Without LTLS the library really couldn’t function at the capacity we do now. We also send and receive things through OCLC. We partner with the School Works team and other professional learning communities to make sure our educators our getting the materials they need.
Tell us a story about your library.
A patron who had recently seen a video at a seminar contacted me to say that this video “should be at every regional office of education in the US, one of the quintessential videos for teaching.” After hearing that, I was surprised that we didn’t have it in our system. I checked in OCLC and found that worldwide there were 5 libraries that owned this video. One of those libraries was in China. I emailed the patron back and let them know that if they needed the video I would be happy to get it for them. I also added the video to a list of possible materials we need to purchase.
If money were no object, what services would you add?
We
would add more materials. The library has two copies of a video every
school has to use in a workshop at the
beginning of the year. Since the school year is starting up, there is a
long waiting list for a copy of this video. With current funds, the
library
can't justify buying 30 copies of something that will only be used once
a year. If money were no object, we could. The library could also use
more kits on current topics that include multiple copies of the
materials for groups of people to collaborate and learn together. |
What is popular in your library?
The most popular materials tend to fall into two categories: Professional learning communities and Differential Instruction. Differential instruction is the art of simultaneously meeting the needs of students at different levels.
How does your library use online tools to connect to your users?
We have a website which informs our patrons of new materials and informs them that they can use LTLS to get the materials they need delivered to their school.
