An interview with Librarian, Miranda Shake.
| What is unique about your library?
|
It’s collection; the library specializes in nursing and allied health literature. The collection of monographs and AV is small, less than 3000 items, however they are exclusively nursing topics. The library currently subscribes to 45 nursing journals in print.
What are the primary goals and objectives of your library?
One of the goals is to get as much online access to journals linked in EbscoHOST databases as possible. Improving the bibliographic instruction methods used to teach students about APA style and database searching is another priority.
What cooperative efforts are you currently doing?
Lakeview College of Nursing has another campus in Charleston at Eastern Illinois University; this requires cooperative agreements with EIU. The library fills Interlibrary loan requests on OCLC and National Library of Medicine’s Docline Service. Mainly medical librarians for nursing and medical resources use Docline. Lakeview is also a member of the Health Science Librarians of Illinois; within that group there is a local group of health librarians who meet quarterly.
Tell us a story about your library.
A simple article request for a student turned out to be information on a life altering procedure that the student was going to ask her doctor to perform for her. This student had been in a terrible car accident before starting nursing school. She went through many painful surgeries and rehabilitation with no relief. She and I spent some time doing literature searches on her condition; finding the perfect article, however it wasn’t full text online. The student was convinced she wouldn’t be able to get the article, but the next day I had it for her. She was so excited and grateful for the information. Months later she came back to thank me and tell me how she had convinced her doctor to perform the new procedure with much success.
If money were no object, what services would you add?
I would love to have a fulltime IT person for Lakeview, currently I wear many hats: Librarian, Computer guru, Database Administrator, Xerox repairwoman. I would love to just be a librarian who can focus on doing more bibliographic instruction and do more with online resources and tutorials. The addition of an IT person would free me up to get a lot more “library” work done. |
What is popular in your library?
Me, well at least I like to think so, my interlibrary loan service is very popular. Plus the students are always very grateful and surprised when I get articles for them often within 24 hours. I once had a student who requested over 75 articles from me all at once; of course I had to pace myself with that task. Normally I receive about 30 article requests a month, some months more, some less.
How does your library use online tools to connect to your users?
We use instant messaging to chat with students off and sometimes on campus. We have a small student body, so most of the students just plop themselves down in front of my desk to ask questions. But it’s important to be available in as many avenues as possible. Although we have a Facebook page for our library I have to admit I haven’t taken full advantage of the possibilities there. One other online tool we use is good old-fashioned email, I send out a question about licensing of nurses 5 days a week to all the students, and they love it. I hope this keeps library services fresh in their minds when they receive my email.
