The Danville Public Library, Altrusa Club of Danville and Friends of the Library’s new project has a fitting name: “Weeds to Seeds.”
“It’s perfectly named. We’re taking ‘weeds’ (books left over after book sales) to try to create new library users,” library Outreach Director Mary Jane Starnes said.
The books, which are normally set out for free pick-ups or recycled, can enjoy even more use.
Starnes and library director Barb Nolan made the first delivery of “weeds” and shelving Tuesday to the community room at Green Meadows Apartments.
Green Meadows, north of Fair Oaks, houses about 300 children and adults.
For their recent Staff Development Day, Champaign Public Library staffer Eric Sizemore and Video Librarian Jenny Veile (from the Librarians Are Weird blog) and others teamed up to produce "Library Jeopardy", a fun video parody of the iconic TV game show featuring library staff in a variety of (sort of) realistic library service scenarios. It looks like a good time was had by all.

Marshall Public Library "English as a Second Language" classes from Lake Land College have been changed from Tuesdays to Wednesdays, from 5:00-7:00 PM. The class will meet in the library's Dale McConchie meeting room beginning December 16th.
Westville opened their new facility in 2003. At the modern, larger location they have been able to offer a greater variety of materials as well as computer access to the internet and word processing. The library's membership with LTLS broadens these capabilities even more. The community room is used for library programing for all ages and can be rented for meetings and parties.
The recent annexation of Tilton and the area outside Danville's southern city limits brings more library services to many more people.
Now it's time to celebrate! Many have worked long and hard to make the new Westville Public Library a reality and to pay off the mortgage in record time. On Saturday December 5th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. the public is invited to tour the library. Refreshments will be served.
Library Journal's latest national rating of public libraries, the LJ Index of Public Library Service 2009, Round 2, identifies 258 star libraries. The stars are determined by 2007 data from the IMLS. The top libraries in each group receive five, four, or three stars.

Local radio personality, J.D. Spangler, read a story to Marshall 2nd Graders last week at Marshall Public Library. Those 56 students who had participated in the "I Can Read @ Marshall Public Library" program were rewarded with a special trip to the library, a free book and a special dog tag for their necklace. The program was funded by Marshall Rotary Club.
The Oakwood Public Library District has been chosen as a recipient of the Bill and Melinda Gates Opportunity Online Grant.
The library must raise matching funds in order to receive the money. The goal is to raise $3,200.
“The library personnel applied for the grant a year ago, and met the criteria for older computers, including having things available to the public,” said Beth Kent, library director.
The staff also attended a conference concerning the grant in Decatur last month. Patron needs are a priority, and that includes helping patrons with job interviewing skills, and business involvement.
The library is sponsoring a read-a-thon, which began Nov. 10 and runs through Tuesday. It is an easy way to raise money through reading. Children will get donations or pledges or per-page amounts from family, neighbors and friends. Next they will read and have a parent initial what was read. There are prizes and pizza parties for the children in each age group who read the most. Home-schooling families also can participate.
