An interview with
Librarian, Jessica Titus
| What is unique about your library?
|
| Our library works with preschool through sixth grade, meaning I have the opportunity to work with lots of ages and provide a wide range of services. I love the variety and challenge involved in choosing and reading books for story time, teaching information literacy lessons, creating displays, providing reader's advisory, sometimes all in the same day. |
| What are the primary goals and objectives of your library? |
My
main goal is to support the information needs of our students and teachers. I teach
students basic library skills that hopefully I can build on once they go to the
jr/sr high school library. One other thing I hope to accomplish is helping to
foster a love of reading in the younger kids, so that they become library
users. |
| What cooperative efforts are you currently doing? |
| I just started as a librarian here in late August, and so I am just getting started with cooperative efforts. I have been focusing on cooperation with the school and teachers. I do story times for the younger kids. If they are learning about Lincoln that week in school, I try to find stories about Lincoln for story time. I hope to do more cooperation as I continue with my position. |
| Tell us a story about your library. |
| The first week of school the kindergartners came in for story time, but that first week they weren’t allowed to check out books. We just talked about the books and how to care for books and the rules of the library. Well, the second week, they come in and we do story time and then I tell them that this week they can check out books. They started clapping and were so excited. For a lot of my kindergarten students, the elementary school library is the first place they ever get to check out a book. It was just so heartwarming to see such a reaction to the library. |
| If money were no object, what services would you add? |
I
am the librarian at both the elementary school library and the jr/sr high
school library. It would be wonderful if I could hire a full time aide so that
both libraries could be open all day to students. We have a rotating smart
board in the school and it would be nice if I could have one permanently in the
library. I would also put more money into collection development and get
different types of materials for the library. |
| What is popular in your library? |
| The Inkheart series is very popular right now. I am not sure if it is because of the movie coming out last year or just because it is a good series. Many of the students just enjoy coming into the library and finding a book to read, so I guess that makes the whole library popular. |
| How does your library use online tools to connect to your users? |
| The elementary library is very small and there is no virtual access to the library. The students have to come into the library to find a book or get the information they need. |
