Based on James Hilton's bestselling 1933 book, Lost Horizon tells the story of five people who discover Shangri-La, a fictional utopian lamasery high in the mountains of Tibet where health, peace, and longevity reign. The film starts Ronald Colman, Jane Wyatt, John Howard, and Edward Everett Horton, and was directed by Frank Capra from a screenplay by Robert Riskin. The movie was nominated for seven Oscars and won two, for film editing and art direction. Lost Horizon is considered one of the top Hollywood films of the 1930's, and the story is the perfect antidote to the winter doldrums.
The screening is free and open to the public, and no registration is required. Copies of the book may be borrowed from the library for free or may be purchased at the Checkout Desk through an arrangement with Blue Kangaroo Books of Danville.
The screening is the ninth in the library's year-long book-to-film series. Each month, participants read a classic novel and view a film adaptation of that book. All screenings begin at 6:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month, with informal discussion immediately following the movies facilitated by library staff. The series is made possible by a grant from the Danville Library Foundation.
