Noted Illinois artist Harold Boyd will talk about his art at a free public lecture starting at 7pm on Monday, November 1. The lecture will be held at the Tarble Arts Center, Eastern Illinois University.
Boyd is best known for his paintings, drawings and original prints, but has also created sculpture in a variety of sizes. His favorite subject is the human figure, and he has portrayed people in many settings and situations. While some of his figures are well known – Adlai Stevenson, Eleanor Roosevelt, Gandhi – and some are comic, all are poignant and say something about human nature and the human condition.
His art has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums. Recent solo exhibition venues include I-Space (Chicago, IL), Conduit Gallery (Dallas, TX), and Perkinson Gallery (Millikin University, Decatur, IL). Other museums that have exhibited his work include the Art Institute of Chicago, Brooklyn Museum of Art, and Nelson-Adkins Museum of Art (Kansas City).
Boyd is represented with art in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Art, Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery (University of Nebraska, Lincoln), Illinois State Museum (Springfield), and many other museums and universities. Boyd received the Juror’s Award in the 1997 Watercolor USA exhibition at the Springfield Art Museum (Missouri) and is included in the Watercolor USA Honor Society.
A member of the Illinois State University studio art faculty for 35 years, Boyd is now Professor Emeritus. He maintains a private studio in Bloomington, Illinois. The book Harold Boyd: Bodies of Work, by Timothy Porges and Barry Blinderman, was published by the University Galleries of ISU in 2002.
Boyd holds an MFA and a BFA from the University of Kansas (Lawrence). He also attended Ohio State University (Columbus).
Boyd’s lecture is presented in conjunction with a solo exhibition of his art titled Harold Boyd: Works on Paper and Other Drawings. The exhibition is on view through November 7 in the Tarble’s Brainard Gallery. It presents watercolor paintings and mixed media drawings.
The lecture is also presented in conjunction with the Tarble’s upcoming 18th Biennial Drawing/Watercolor: Illinois exhibition that starts December 11. Boyd is the juror of the 18th Biennial. He will select the art to be exhibited and determine the award winners.
