An informal tour of the exhibition “Bridging the Past: Paul Sargent’s Coles County” will be the topic of an EIU Academy of Lifetime Learning Lunch & Learn program. The gallery talk will be presented Friday, May 6, noon, at the Tarble Arts Center by Tarble Director Michael Watts.

The exhibition “Paul Sargent’s Coles County” explores the history of Coles County, Illinois, through paintings of area sites by Charleston artist Paul T. Sargent (1880-1946), supplemented with photographs, artifacts and other contextual materials. Presented is a story of change and continuity from the 1930s to today. The exhibition continues through June 12 in the Tarble’s eGallery.
The exhibition is comprised of loans from area collectors, Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site, University Archives in EIU’s Booth Library, and paintings from the Tarble's permanent collection. Featured are paintings from private collections, some not previously presented for public view, and rare period photographs from Sargent family members.
A geo-caching activity and virtual tour are incorporated into the project. The exhibition was organized by the EIU History Department's 2010-11 Historical Administration graduate students working in cooperation with the Tarble Arts Center.
The exhibition also serves as the subject for the Tarble’s current Fifth Grade Enrichment program for area schools, and as a presentation for the 2011 Historic Preservation Awards Program on May 18, 7pm. The Enrichment program underwritten by First Mid-Illinois Bank & Trust. The historic preservation awards program is sponsored by Coles County’s Historic Preservation Advisory Council of the Regional Planning and Development Commission, and the Association for the Preservation of Historic Coles County.
The Academy of Lifetime Learning is a learning community sponsored by the Eastern Illinois University School of Continuing Education. The Academy is open to everyone in the area who is age 50 and over and who has a curiosity and desire to learn.
