The next SirsiDynix Institute, "Guide to Roving: An Essential Service for Library 2.0", will be presented by Joan Giannone - President, Mentor Group Training Inc. on Tuesday, December 11, 2007, 11 a.m. - noon Eastern / 8 a.m. - 9 a.m. Pacific.

Across North America, and around the world, libraries are working to implement Roving Reference as a practical way to both improve service to their existing customers, and to attract and convert new ones. One of the driving forces behind the need for Roving at Libraries has been, and continues to be technological change. And following in the wake of the implementation of technology in any organization is the challenge posed by transition. Technological Change is comprised of external forces (Library 2.0, RSS, Wikki's, IM, Installing free downloadable digital content, policy changes, structure change, etc.). Transition is internally focused (the reflection, re-grouping, reorientation and training people have to go through before the change can work).

Update Horizon Calendar

With upcoming holidays and the end of the year looming, libraries are reminded to update their Horizon calendar to reflect the library’s closed days for 2007 and 2008. You must have security access to update your library's calendar. You will find the calendar at the bottom of the Horizon Navigation Bar. Click on the link entitled, "Calendar Exceptions," a search screen will appear, highlight the "Location" index, type in your 3-letter code, and click "Search."

A list of your library's closed days will appear. If past holidays or closed days already exist from last year, you can edit those dates by highlighting the line and clicking on "Edit." Change any information such as description or date, click "Save" and "Close." If you need to add a new holiday or closed day, click "New" to add an additional day. Add the description and date for the day. If you are closed the entire day, you do not need to add opening/closing times. Click "Save" and "Close."

Libraries are responsible for maintaining their own calendars. Not updating the calendar means that items may have due dates on dates that you are closed, and notices will be generated for the days you are closed.

Collection Code reduction

LTLS staff have identified over 500 collection codes in LINC that have fewer than 10 items attached to each code. In the interest of maintaining an efficient database, we are sending emails to directors that have such codes, requesting that these infrequently-used codes be deleted. Helen Neal, hneal@lincolntrail.info, is coordinating this project so you may receive an email, with a list of your codes, from her. We appreciate your help with this database maintenance project.
