LINC Update

LINC Holiday 11/11

The IHLS-Champaign office will be closed on Veterans' Day, 11/11/11.  There will be no delivery.  LINC support will be available via the emergency phone only (217-979-1182).

We are having some problems with the LINC phone system at the Champaign office.  Please try and connect using 217-352-0047, x 1 but if no one answers, either redial to 217-352-0047 x 0 or call the emergency phone at 217-979-1182.

Uncorrected Proofs Versus Published Editions

Please be careful not to attach item records for published copies of books to bibliographic records for uncorrected proofs, advance reading copies, uncorrected galleys, etc.  Whatever the publishers choose to call these, they  are prepublication releases for reviewers and, because they have not received final editing, constitute different editions from their published counterparts.

Records for advance reading copies have edition statements that distinguish them from published editions of the same work, and we try to make sure that we add the genre heading "Proofs (Printing)" to each bib record.

Update on CHN and URN Migration

Based on the timeline for Champaign Public and Urbana Free Library's migration out of the LINC database, effective 11/1/2011 there is now in place ‘no circulation loans allowed’  and 'no holds allowed' rules for these situations:

• No circulation loans or holds allowed for all CHN and URN patrons on other LINC libraries’ items.
• No circulation loans or holds allowed for the LINC libraries’ patrons on CHN and URN’s items.

Also, a large number of existing holds were cancelled on Monday evening, 10/31, for these situations:

• Outstanding holds for CHN and URN patrons where the item is only owned by a LINC library.  If CHN or URN possess a copy the hold will remain.
• Outstanding holds for the LINC libraries’ patrons where the item is only owned by CHN or URN.  If a LINC library possess a copy the hold will remain.

However, after testing on 11/1, we have realized that holds that were under suspension have not been removed.  Sirsi/Dynix is working on the problem and those holds will be removed as soon as possible.  LINC staff, after testing, has also realized that holds placed in the CHN or URN pac will allow a patron from a LINC library to place a hold with delivery to CHN or URN.  We are working to eliminate this possibility as well.

Libraries should create auto notices on 11/1/2011 and send hold notices to notify patrons of these cancellations.

Vendor demos fast approaching

The two finalist automation platform vendor demonstrations (Polaris - Nov. 7 & 8 and SirsiDynix Symphony - Nov. 15 & 16) are approaching quickly.  We encourage you to register staff for either the in-person demonstrations in Effingham or the live streaming demonstration that will be available via the web.   We need LINC member libraries to participate in these demonstrations to help IHLS evaluate these products. Link to the IHLS agenda web announcement to see the agenda, dates and links to register on L2 for the individual demonstrations.  

IHLS-LINC staff will be attending the demonstrations on all 4 days.  We would have limited seating available if anyone would like to carpool.  Also, our parking lot would be available for anyone needing a place to park their vehicle for the day.  If you need a ride, contact Donna Schaal at dschaal@illinoisheartland.org.

Borrower purge completed

Over the last week, the Borrower Purge was completed for all libraries.  A total of 37,512 borrower records were deleted that met the following parameters:

• Expired for more than 2 years
• Owed less than $10.00 in outstanding fines and lost items.
