Open House for Fred Schlipf

The Urbana Free Library has announced an Open House to honor Fred Schlipf on his retirement after 32 years of service to the library and the Urbana community on Sunday, May 6, 2007 from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. in the Front Reading Room of the library.  Attendees are invited to bring cards or letters to add to a basket full of memories for Fred.  If you cannot attend, you can send congratulations or favorite memories of Fred in care of Rebecca Brown or via email to rbrown@tufl.info.  A flyer for the event is available.

AT&T Excelerator Technology Grants for Nonprofit Organizations

The 2007 AT&T Excelerator grant program will provide a total of $9 million in competitive technology grants to help local nonprofit organizations integrate technology into their operations and community outreach. AT&T Excelerator grants are designed to help nonprofit organizations improve their operations and build stronger communities through Internet access, data networking, online outreach, staff technology capacity, and pooled technology resources.

Ezra Jack Keats Foundation Minigrant Program

The Ezra Jack Keats Foundation offers minigrants of $500 to Public School and Public Libraries for programs that encourage literacy and creativity in children. Programs relating to the work of Ezra Jack Keats (writer and illustrator) are welcome, but not required. An application form is available on the website. Deadline is September 15 (every year).

Save America's Treasures Offering Grants for Preservation Activities

Save America's Treasures is a public-private partnership that awards challenge grants to eligible historic resources for approved preservation activities. These grants help fund preservation and/or conservation work on nationally significant intellectual and cultural artifacts and nationally significant historic structures and sites.

NEH Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions

Preservation Assistance Grants help small and mid-sized institutions, such as libraries, museums, historical societies, archival repositories, town and county records offices, and colleges, improve their ability to preserve and care for their humanities collections. The History Channel - Save Our History Grant Program

Libraries, museums, historic sites, historical societies, preservation organizations, and archives are invited to partner with a local school or youth group and apply for funding to help preserve the history of their communities. The History Channel will award $250,000 in grants of up to $10,000 to fund projects that teach students about their local history and actively engage them in preservation and documentation.

New Course: Planning and Managing Library Buildings

The Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is offering a new continuing education course, Planning and Managing Library Buildings (approved by ALA-APA for CPLA candidates).

This course will familiarize the student with the basic principles of building planning and management. Topics included are building maintenance and operational procedures, capital and facility development plans, building programs, construction process for new and remodeled buildings, life and safety issues in building operation and planning, technology planning, and post-occupancy evaluation. Upon completion, the student will be able to employ effective building maintenance and operation procedures, understand and prepare capital improvement and facility development plans, list procedures used in employing architectural, engineering, and consultant assistance in building maintenance and development programs, describe the planning and construction processes for new or renovated facilities, list issues involved in building operation and planning, and describe post-occupancy evaluation procedures.

Dates: May 3 – June 7, 2007
