Scholarship money is available for future librarians! The American Library Association (ALA) has more than $300,000 for students who are studying library science or school library media at the master’s degree level.
Scholarships typically range from $2,500 to $6,500 per student per year. The application and instructions are available on-line at www.ala.org/scholarships. The application deadline is March 1.
There are many types of scholarships available for the study of librarianship. These include scholarships for students who are interested in Children’s Librarianship, School Librarianship, Youth Librarianship, Federal Librarianship, and Library Automation. In addition, there are also scholarships available for minorities, persons with disabilities and for people who are already employed in libraries but do not have an MLS.
To be considered for one of these scholarships, applicants must attend a masters program in library and information science that has been accredited by the ALA. Applicants interested in school library media must attend a program that meets ALA curriculum guidelines for the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
The scholarship process is open annually from October through March. For more information, visit www.ala.org/scholarships or call the ALA Scholarship Clearinghouse at 800-545-2433, ext. 4279.
More than 6,000 teen readers across the country chose “New Moon” by Stephenie Meyer as their favorite book in the annual Teens' Top Ten (TTT) vote, sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), the fastest-growing division of the American Library Association (ALA). The online vote took place during Teen Read Week, October 14-20, with the second entry in Meyer's popular vampire romance series winning easily. The BWI/YALSA Collection Development grant awards $1000 for collection development to YALSA members who represent a public library and who work directly with young adults ages 12 to 18. Up to two grants will be awarded annually.
Each application will be judged on the basis of: the need for additional young adult materials; the current collection's use; the rationale for the selection of materials; the benefits this grant will bring to young adults; and the degree the applicant's philosophy reflects the concepts identified in Directions for Library Service to Young Adults. Application and more information is on the YALSA website. Deadline is December 1, 2007.

OCLC just published Sharing, Privacy and Trust in Our Networked World. This report to the OCLC membership summarizes the findings from an international study on online social spaces, including social networking attitudes and habits of both end users and librarians.
OCLC Market Research staff developed a project and commissioned Harris Interactive Inc. to survey over 6,100 information consumers ages 14 to 84 from Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. In addition, 382 U.S. library directors were also surveyed.
The report summarizes four primary areas:
The use of social networking, social media, commercial and library services on the Web
How and what users and librarians share on the Web
Opinions on privacy online
Libraries’ current and future roles in social networking
The findings suggest that the social Web is a very different place, one being built and shared by millions of users. As such, the library’s role must be different, too. Download a free copy or purchase a printed copy and share it with others who are interested in how issues of social networking, privacy and trust are shaping a new Internet experience for us all.
