IMLS National Award for Library Service

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is accepting nominations for the agency's 2007 National Award for Library Service. The deadline is February 15, 2007.

This award is the highest honor the nation confers on libraries for their outstanding contribution to America's communities. Selected libraries demonstrate extraordinary and innovative approaches to public service, exceeding the expected levels of community outreach and core programs generally associated with their services. The award includes a prize of $10,000 to each recipient and an awards ceremony to be held in Washington, DC.

The main qualification for selection is community service, as demonstrated by the library's ongoing commitment, at every level, to its community. Nominations should describe the library's goal in serving its community, the population served, how the community works together to achieve the goal, the outcome of this effort during the past two to three years, and projections for future efforts.

The National Museum and Library Services Board reviews the nominations and makes recommendations to the IMLS Director, who makes the final selection.

More information and a link to the nomination form are at http://www.imls.gov/about/awards.shtm.

I READ Resource Guide ideas needed

The Illinois Library Association’s 2008 Summer Reading Club theme is Get in the Game - READ! It will focus on sports, games, and gaming. The sports part refers to typical sports, as well as sports you might see in the summer Olympics since it is an Olympic year. The games part refers to board games, card games, and traditional games like marbles, hopscotch, and jacks. The gaming refers to people playing computer games, playstation games, game boy games, and others.

The IREAD (Illinois Reading Enrichment and Development) Committee is putting together a Resource Guide of ideas for using this theme and we need your help. Please go the ILA website at http://www.ila.org/pub/iread.htm and submit your great, original idea. Deadline is March 16, 2007.

Card Pockets

Champaign Public Library has card pockets to give away. They are not self-adhesive, but they are of good quality. Anyone who's interested can contact Nanette Wargo at: nwargo@champaign.org. Arrangements would need to be made to pick up the pockets at the Champaign Public Library.

LibraryU - Calling All Trustees

Did you know there are over 80,000 elected public library trustees in the United States? Chances are, when first elected, a significant percentage of those 80,000 thought serving as a public library trustee would simply mean sitting in a meeting once a month and casting a vote every now and then. Or maybe they were under the misperception that serving on the library board just meant making suggestions for the best books to be purchased by the library.

Thankfully, library services have come a long way from the "books only" image that they once had. Electronic resources, reader’s advisory, the Internet, databases, multi-media and 24-hour reference service on demand are just a few of the many services that libraries have to offer in this information age. However, this means that today’s libraries face many more complicated issues concerning information access, censorship and information literacy. Because of that, the job of a library trustee may be more challenging, but also more stimulating and rewarding in the long run.

TrusteE-Training (TRU005), the most recent addition to the LibraryU catalog, reinforces trustee roles and responsibilities and addresses some of the issues public library trustees face today. Presented in 4 segments each requiring approximately 15 minutes to complete, this module uses creative interactive exercises and real life scenarios to educate and encourage trustees in their role. Enroll now at http://www.libraryu.org. NOTE: Although this module has an Illinois focus, much of the information is relevant to public library trustees in general.

President's FY2008 Budget Has Increase For Libraries

President Bush's FY2008 budget proposal to Congress contains funding increases for libraries in several programs. The American Library Association thanked the Administration for its consistent support of increased library funding especially in today's extremely tight fiscal environment.

The budget request includes $226,182,000 for the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), an increase of $15,585,000 over FY 2006. The budget includes an increase in the Grants to States program, which will allow a more equitable distribution of state formula grants.

The Budget also includes $4 million for policy research and statistics, level funding for the Improving Literacy Through School Libraries program, and $26,500,000 for the First Lady's Twenty-First Century Librarian Program, a $2,740,000 million increase over 2006. This program helps to ensure that the nation has another generation of trained librarians to serve their communities.
