The Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is offering Organization and Personnel Management for Librarians, an online continuing professional development course, February 5 - March 11, 2008. The course is ALA-APA approved for Certified Public Library Administrator (CPLA) candidates, but is open to any interested librarian or information professional. This course will familiarize the student with the basic principles of library personnel management and organization, including personnel administration within the context of the mission and goals of the organization. The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) are sponsoring a digital humanities grant program, "Advancing Knowledge: The IMLS/NEH Digital Partnership." Grant projects should explore new ways to share, examine, and interpret humanities collections in a digital environment and develop new uses and audiences for existing digital resources. Grants are intended to spur innovation and new collaborations; advance the role of cultural repositories in online teaching, learning, and research; and develop collaborative approaches involving the scholarly community and cultural repositories for the creation, management, preservation, and presentation of reusable digital collections and products. Projects must be collaborative with at least one museum, library, or archive as an integral member of the project team. Awards are for two years and typically range from $50,000 to $350,000.

Applicants are encouraged to contact program officers who can offer advice about preparing the proposal and review draft proposals. Draft proposals should be submitted six weeks before the deadline. The American Library Association (ALA) and Dollar General Foundation have partnered to increase literary Services to English language learners. A new grant entitled, “The American Dream Starts @ your library,” funded by the Dollar General Foundation seeks to help public libraries increase their literacy services to adult English language learners. The grant will give 15 libraries a one-time award of $5,000 each.
Grants will be made to public libraries with a demonstrated need to provide literacy services to adult immigrants’ resources to expand or add literacy services for adult English language learners. To qualify, public libraries must be located within 20 miles of a Dollar General Store, distribution center or corporate office. For the first time in years, the Illinois State Library will offer a spring season round of Live and Learn Public Library Construction Grants, with awards ranging from $2,500 to $125,000 in three seperate offerings. The program assists public libraries with construction costs in their facilities. While any Illinois public library may apply, priority will be given to public libraries that have not received a Live and Learn Construction Grant Program grant since July 1, 2004. The first important date to remember is February 15th 2008, when Letters of Intent are due. Full Applications are due or postmarked by April 11, 2008.
