ACRL announces Frequent Learner Program

The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) announces the launch of a new e-Learning Frequent Learner Program to help academic and research librarians maximize their professional development dollars during these challenging economic times. Starting Sept. 1, individuals or groups that register for three ACRL e-Learning courses or Webcasts will receive complimentary registration to one additional course or Webcast of equal or lesser value to the lowest cost-paid e-Learning opportunity. New ALA Web site helps library job seekers succeed

A new American Library Association (ALA) Web site -- Get a Job!, offers library-job seekers advice, resources, links, best practices and real-life examples.  Full of advice for finding a job in the current tough economy, it features information from a range of ALA divisions and units, as well as links to information about general best practices in job seeking.

U.S. Education Secretary and New Jersey Governor Visit Library

On Monday, U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan joined New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine at Fanwood Public Library to launch a national campaign called "Summer of Service," promoting volunteerism and community involvement. Read more about the event as reported by Tracee Herbaugh for The Star-Ledger.

Gaming Pavilion to showcase link between gaming and literacy

In today’s technology-driven world, learning reaches beyond the classroom. As literacy formats change, the demand increases for these new resources. On July 11 to 14 at McCormick Place West in the Exhibits Hall, the American Library Association (ALA) Gaming Pavilion will showcase the latest format to support literacy in libraries – gaming.

IMLS Launches "Libraries to the Rescue"

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the primary source of federal funding for grants to libraries and museums, has launched the Libraries to the Rescue series of podcast episodes to increase awareness of innovative library initiatives for helping people in today's tough economic climate.

Whether it's resources for job seeking, resume writing, starting a small business, updating skills, or many other areas, libraries are at the forefront in providing needed resources and services for their communities.  Libraries to the Rescue will compile information on these efforts in the form of resource lists and a series of podcasts with library leaders to help spread the word so others don't have to reinvent the wheel.  Listen to the audio podcasts or read the transcripts and view the resource materials at the Libraries to the Rescue website.

The Illinois State Library is offering a discount to ILLINET member libraries for the Internet Librarian 2009 Conference, held at the Monterey Conference Center in Monterey, California on October 26-28, 2009. 

A special rate of $279.00 for the 3 day event is available.  In addition, discount prices of $169 on the Internet@Schools Conference (October 26-27) and $279 for the combo of the Internet Librarian general conference and Internet@Schools  Conference is also available.  Pre-conference workshops are not included. Minimum Wage Reminder

On July 1st, the Illinois minimum wage will increase from the current $7.75 to $8.00.

Public Act 94-1072, signed into law December 18, 2006, increased the Illinois minimum wage from $6.50 to $7.50 and established annual increases of twenty-five cents that go into effect every July 1st. These increases are scheduled to stop when the wage hits $8.25 in 2010.

Again, the Illinois minimum wage will increase from the current $7.75 to $8.00 on July 1st.

Libraries across the United States are invited to apply for the $3,000 Scholastic Library Publishing National Library Week Grant, which will be awarded to a single library for the best public awareness campaign incorporating the 2010 National Library Week theme, “Communities thrive @ your library®.”
