Nomination period open for ASCLA disability services award

The Association for Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA) seeks nominations for the 2010 ASCLA/KLAS/NOD Award.

Sponsored by ASCLA, the National Organization on Disability (NOD) and Keystone Systems, Inc., this award recognizes an innovative and well-organized project that successfully developed or expanded services for people with disabilities.  The award can be for a specific service(s) program or for a library that has made its total services more accessible through changing physical and/or attitudinal barriers. The winner receives $1,000 and a citation provided by Keystone Systems, Inc..

Those interested in submitting a nomination can download the award nomination form from the awards section of the ASCLA website or request the form from Liz Markel, ASCLA Marketing Specialist, via e-mail at lmarkel@ala.org. All nominations must be received by Jan. 11, 2010.

ASCLA accepting nominations for 2010 service, leadership, achievement awards

The Association for Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA) is now accepting nominations for the Leadership and Professional Achievement Award, the Exceptional Service Award and the Cathleen Bourdon Service Award for 2010.

These three awards recognize accomplishments in the following areas:

Manuscripts sought for LITA/Ex Libris student writing award

The Library and Information Technology Association (LITA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), is offering an award for the best unpublished manuscript submitted by a student or students enrolled in an ALA-accredited graduate program.  Sponsored by LITA and Ex Libris, the award consists of $1,000, publication in LITA’s refereed journal, Information Technology and Libraries (ITAL) and a certificate.  The deadline for submission of the manuscript is Feb. 28, 2010.

Library workers urged to participate in survey of workplace wellness in libraries

The American Library Association-Allied Professional Association (ALA-APA) and the ALA Office for Human Resource Development and Recruitment (HRDR) are encouraging library employees to participate in the 2009-2010 Library Workplace Wellness online survey. The survey provides an important opportunity for library employees to share information about the availability of, and employee participation in, work/life options in libraries around the nation. The online survey, available at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=0Pz4LqU_2bnMJOyZORPX8GYQ_3d_3d, will be available open through early 2010.

Capital Needs Assessment Survey

All Illinois public libraries received a request from the Illinois State Library a few weeks ago to complete a Capital Needs Assessment Survey.  The survey is required by the Illinois General Assembly as part of the legislation authorizing capital improvement funding for public library construction funds for Illinois libraries. The deadline for the Capital Needs Assessment Survey is Monday, Nov. 30th.

It is important to have all public libraries participate in this survey, even if your library doesn't need any capital improvements.

The survey is in the form of a downloadable PDF document that you can fill out and save on your computer.  You will then email the completed survey to Mark Shaffer (mshaffer@ilsos.net) at the Illinois State Library as an email attachment.

ER- XPO: The Illinois State Library’s Electronic Resource Exposition

You, your staffs, as well as the libraries served by your system are cordially invited to attend the ER- XPO: The Illinois State Library’s Electronic Resource Exposition, which will be held Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. until 4: 30 p.m.  The Schaumburg Township District Library, located at 130 Roselle Road, Schaumburg, Illinois will once again host this signature event.
 
The 2009 ER-XPO features vendors who have participated in Try-It! Illinois 2009.  The day will provide
opportunities for one-on-one consultations with vendor representatives, as well as Q & A focus sessions with individual vendor presentations in a lab setting. There is no charge to attend the E-R-XPO. 
 
Vendors that have agreed to participate in the ER-XPO include, Capstone Publishers, EBSCO, Encyclopedia Britannica, GALE/CENGAGE Learning, Lexis Nexis, Mango Languages, Morningstar, OCLC, Public Records, Questia School, Rand McNally, Geographic Research Inc. - Simply Maps, Standard and Poors, U.S. Business Journal, The World and I, and World Book.

The iREAD committee has produced a PSA to help libraries promote summer reading in 2010. The Scare Up a Good Book! Video can been seen on the ILA Web site and, new for this year, ILA has also placed the video on YouTube to make it an easy post to your library's Web site.
