EXCITING NEWS!!! The ALA and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) present a new cultural programming opportunity for libraries, the Louisa May Alcott: The Woman Behind Little Women Library Outreach Program. Thirty $2,500 grants will support five reading, viewing and discussion programs about Louisa May Alcott's life and times. The program features the first film biography of the beloved author, Louisa May Alcott: The Woman Behind Little Women(PBS American Masters), named by Booklist as Top Video of 2009, and the biography with the same title (Holt) named to best 10 lists by Booklist, Bookpage, January, and the Wall Street Journal. Both are compelling, entertaining, and depict a strong woman way ahead of her time, deeply involved in the great issues of her day. You'll find that Louisa May Alcott's story is no children's book.
Online applications will be accepted at www.grants.gov through July 30.
Even if your library does not seek a grant, you will have access to the program notebook on the ALA website. The library outreach program is a collaboration between NEH, the ALA Public Programs Office and producers Nancy Porter and Harriet Reisen, and has been designated as part of NEH's We the People initiative, exploring "significant events and themes in our nation's history and culture and advancing knowledge of the principles that define America."
Director Nancy Porter and Writer Harriet Reisen will be speaking about the new NEH/ALA program at the ALA Summer Conference 2010 at the Grand Hyatt, 1000 H Street, Northwest, in the Constitution Room C/D, Saturday, June 26, 10:30am-12:00pm. Reisen will be signing books at Macmillan table 2804 from 12:30-2:00pm.
