Members looking to deepen their involvement with the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), can join one of YALSA’s many discussion or interest groups. The groups allow members to discuss important topics in young adult services — including gaming, anime and attending library school, among others — both in person and virtually. Attendees at ALA's Midwinter Meeting can learn more about YALSA's Discussion and Interest Groups by attending the Discussion & Interest Group Open House 4-5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25, in Room 203 at the Colorado Convention Center.
Discussion groups allow participants to informally discuss topics of common interest virtually, in addition to meeting at ALA's Annual Conference and Midwinter Meeting. Those interested may join in the discussion taking place at conferences or online via YALSA's electronic discussion lists. An interest group is a sub-body established to facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences and may sponsor formal conference programs, institutes and seminars or prepare publications. The groups are completely self-initiated and not appointed by YALSA officers. To join the group, simply contact the convener and let him or her know that you want to be involved. Members of discussion and interest groups are not required to attend the Annual Conference or the Midwinter Meeting, and there is no limit on the number of virtual participants a discussion or interest group may have.
