For those libraries using the iREAD 2009 Read on the Wild Side theme, there is a Public Service Announcement posted on the iREAD page of the ILA website to promote the summer reading program.
This 30-second video can be used free of charge to assist in spreading the word about Read on the Wild Side.

Reading aloud to children and teens

 ALA Editions, the publishing imprint of the American Library Association, has released  “Reid's Read-Alouds: Selections for Children and Teens” by Rob Reid. Inspired by Reid’s popular column in “Book Links” magazine, this time-saving resource includes plenty to engage audiences and reinvigorate programs.

Advance your career with YALSA’s half-day preconference

Library school students, new librarians or seasoned professionals looking to advance can find professional inspiration at Moving Up the YA Career Ladder, a half-day preconference offered July 10 at the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference in Chicago by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the ALA.

Participants at the preconference will identify career opportunities for young adult librarians, understand how to identify and sharpen the skills they need to successfully transition careers, learn how to write effective resumes and CVs and assess their own management styles and the management styles of others. Attendees will leave with a helpful, practical set of tools they can use immediately to improve their careers.

This half-day preconference takes place 12:30 – 4: 30 p.m. Tickets cost $129. Registration for ALA Annual Conference is not required to attend the YALSA preconference. Registration is available at www.ala.org/annual.

Explore the universe of teen reading at YALSA’s full-day preconference

Join the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), at Genre Galaxy, its full-day preconference on July 10 at the ALA’s Annual Conference, and discover how to connect to teen library users with books. Authors scheduled to appear include Holly Black (“The Spiderwick Chronicles,” “The Good Neighbors, Book One: Kin”), Cecil Castellucci (“Janes in Love,” “Beige”), David Lubar (“Sleeping Freshman Never Lie,” “True Talents”) and Dom Testa (“The Comet’s Curse”).

Recruit a new member to YALSA by March 23 and win a Flip Video camera

Encourage a friend or colleague to join the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), by March 23, and both could win a Flip Ultra video camera. All current YALSA members who recruit a new member to YALSA will be entered into a drawing to win a free Flip Video Ultra camcorder for themselves and their new recruits. The member drive ends March 23.

Rebecca Caudill Packet Creation Workshop

Sign up now for the Rebecca Caudill Packet Creation Workshop scheduled for Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at the Helen Mathes Library in Effingham.  The day will begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude by 4:00 p.m.

Join with fellow librarians and teachers to create a packet of information and activities to accompany the 20 books selected for the 2010 Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book Award.  As participants, attendees will help to prepare a book summary, discussion questions, activities, reading recommendations, book talks, lists of related materials and web sites for each book on the list.

Each participant is assigned at least two titles to read and for which to be responsible.  However, everyone is encouraged to read as many of the books on the list of 20 as possible before the workshop.

Encourage teens @ your library to vote for the 2010 Teen Tech Week™ theme

The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), invites all teens to get out the vote for Teen Tech Week™, March 8-14. Teens can vote for the 2010 Teen Tech Week theme (and answer a short survey about their use of technology) at www.ala.org/teentechweek.

Teens’ input will help determine the 2010 theme. They can choose from three potential themes: TMI @ your library, FYI @ your library and Create, Share, Learn @ your library. Each theme allows teens and librarians to build programs and events on the expansive technology offerings available to teens, for free, at public and school libraries.

Library careers in children’s literature celebrated in Second Life

From 9:45 a.m. until noon PST/LST on Tuesday, March 17, the American Library Association’s (ALA) Recruitment Assembly will celebrate “Adventures in Children’s Literature: Careers for School, Public, and Academic Librarians” in Second Life.

Do you love children's books? Are they inspiring you to consider a career as a librarian? Come join the assembly on ALA Island (SLurl: http://slurl.com/secondlife/ALA%20Island/128/103/29) for an eclectic event celebrating library careers in children's literature. We'll hear from public librarians, school librarians and even academic librarians whose work involves promoting a love of reading in young people.

SLJ Announces 2009 Book Prices

School Library Journal announces average book prices each March to help librarians plan their budgets.  For 2009, prices are up slightly (about 1%) from 2008 levels.  The price survey is compiled by Albert Greco of Fordham University Business School, an expert on the book industry.  The 2009 data is based on the assumption that the recession will begin to subside in the 3rd quarter of 2009.

Here are the prices for  the children's categories.  Pricing for additional categories is available on the SLJ website.

Children's and YA Titles: 
  Hardcovers:   $21.36
  Trade Paperback:  $11.45
  Mass market paperbacks:  $7.12
