As part of Get Inspired! Meet a Hero at Your Library, The Urbana Free Library is inviting the community to read the following books and attend special presentations focusing on local heroes during February:
Listen to the Wisest of All. On Saturday, February 16, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., Rita Blockman and Kimberly Morin, who spent 2 ½ years recording the life stories of individuals aged 88 to 104, will introduce their book. Then they will give the floor to a few of the local interviewees who will share their words of wisdom from the past. This will be followed by an intergenerational legacy workshop designed to help you capture your own family memories.
The Everlasting Stream, a true story of rabbits, guns, friendship, and family. On Sunday, February 24, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m., Walt Harrington, award winning former writer for The Washington Post Magazine and current chair of the U of I Journalism Department, will be at the library to talk about his book and autograph copies. It is the story of his education in life lessons, served up by his father-in-law and cronies on their annual Thanksgiving rabbit hunts in rural Kentucky.
On the Wings of Heroes. On Friday, February 29, there will be a special after hours program for families from 6 to 9 p.m. Newbery award winning author Richard Peck will be there to talk about writing the story of young Davy Bowman and his family on the home front during World War II. Set in Decatur, Illinois, the book is filled with nostalgia and boyhood adventure in the Midwest. In addition, there will be lots of activities for all ages--swing dancing and music from the era, 1940’s games such as Monopoly and Rook, popular 1940’s pastimes such as movie star paper dolls, yo yo, and Slinky contests, and more.
