Danville Library Foundation - Birthday Club Sign Up

Beginning January 1, 2009, the Danville Public Library will begin honoring members of its Library Birthday Club the last Saturday of each month.  Anyone giving a donation to the Danville Library Foundation honoring a child or teenager’s birthday becomes a member of the Club and gets special treatment!

DANVILLE LIBRARY OFFERS WINTER READING PROGRAM FOR KIDS

The Danville Public Library Children's Department invites area children who are in Preschool through Grade 3 to participate in its Winter Read-Aloud Program.  The annual reading program is designed to encourage reading at all age levels, reading for fun, and sharpening those reading skills in a fun way in the process.

The Winter Read-Aloud Program is beginning during Winter Break when students are looking for something to do to fill in their time.  From December 26 through March 28, children can read aloud to family, friends, pets  — anyone who will listen. Books that are read to the children will also count in the reading program, making this a project the whole family can enjoy together.

WINTER USED BOOK SALE

The St. Joseph Township-Swearingen Memorial Library announces its Winter Used Book Sale.  The book sale will begin Monday, January 7th and end January 15th.  Paperbacks are 25¢ and hardbacks are 50¢. We will have children's materials only!  There will be fiction, non-fiction, picture books and encyclopedia sets.  The sale will run during normal library hours, which are:  Mondays & Wednesdays 3 pm to 8 pm; Tuesdays & Thursdays 9 am to 6 pm; Fridays 1 pm to 7 pm; Saturdays 9 am to 3 pm.  We are NOT accepting donations at this time.  Please call to donate after February 1st.  For more information please call 469-2159.

U of Illinois Return on Investment Study Published

The results of a study, The Library as Strategic Investment: Results of the Illinois Return on Investment Study by Paula Kaufman, University Librarian, University of Illinois, on the return on investment of the University of Illinois Library have been published in Liber Quarterly.

Abstract

University administrators are asking library directors to demonstrate their library's value to the institution in easily articulated quantitative terms that focus on outputs rather than on traditionally reported input measures. This paper reports on a study undertaken at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign that sought to measure the return on the university's investment in its library. The study sought to develop a quantitative measure that recognizes the library's value in supporting the university's strategic goals, using grant income generated by faculty using library materials. It also sought to confirm the benefits of using electronic resources and the resulting impact on productivity over a 10-year period. The results of this study, which is believed to be the first of its kind, represent only one piece of the answer to the challenge of representing the university's total return from its investment in its library.

Popcorn at the Library

Heard from Jocelyn Tipton, via Facebook, that Booth Library at E.I.U. provides a supply of free popcorn and lemonade for students during finals week. What a great idea!

Art Print Presentation to Danville Public Library

Amy Chrisman presented four art prints to the Danville Public Library at the December 15 meeting of the Library Board.  Pictured are Amy Chrisman, artist, and Bill Satterwhite, President, Danville Public Library Board of Trustees.  The donated prints are, from left to right, The Lamon House, Kathryn Randolph Theater, Danville Stadium, and The Masonic Temple.  Prints in two sizes and note cards are available for purchase at three Danville locations:  Images Framing & Fine Art, Resh Frame Shop, and the Alley Gallery.

Marshall Public Library Big Read 2009 Events

This coming March the Marshall Public Library will be celebrating The Big Read with "Call of the Wild" by Jack London. Beginning with a screening of the Hallmark film Dog of the Yukon on March 5th at 6:30 p.m. Other events include a story time with Annie the Reading Education Assitance Dog on March 7th at 10:30 a.m. and a Call of the Wild Book Discussion Program on March 12th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Each weekday throughout March in the library and on the library website winners will be drawn randomly from the correct answers to the library's trivia contest, daily prize - a free Dairy Queen Blizzard!  For more information call (217)826-2535. Homer Library Non-resident Card Fee Increased

The Homer Community Library Board of Trustees voted unanimously to increase the fee for non-resident memberships to $35.00 effective Jan 1, 2009. It was further resolved that paid-up card holders may extend their present memberships for one year at the current fee of $28.00 if they do so before the new rate goes into effect.

LIBRARY TO HOLD DRAWING FOR DEC. 13 SYMPHONY TICKETS

The Danville Public Library is holding a drawing for two free tickets to the Danville Symphony Orchestra’s December 13 concert, “Christmas with Maureen McGovern”.  The winning entry will be drawn at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, December 10.  The winner will be notified by telephone.  Tickets are provided compliments of the Danville Symphony Orchestra.  Entry forms are available at the Checkout Desk on the first floor of the library.
