Mattoon Library board to take next step on expanding district

Library board members will continue steps toward filing a referendum to create a library district in surrounding townships.

The library board meets at 5:15 p.m. Monday in the lower level of Mattoon Public Library. That level can be reached by stairs or the elevator.

The library’s current tax base is limited to residents of Mattoon. The goal is to create a library district defined by the borders of Mattoon Community Unit School District 2 in western Coles County plus two townships, Nelson and Whitney, in Moultrie County.

Individuals and families living outside the city must now pay a $45 annual fee for library services.
