Library officials want to field voters' questions on the upcoming Go District referendum, Mattoon Public Library Director Ryan Franklin said Thursday.
A special information meeting of the Mattoon library board of trustees is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, in the lower level of the library building. Library officials will present their goals for a library district if approved on April 7, and what to expect if the referendum is defeated by voters in the city and the proposed district expansion area. The library wants to add townships within the Mattoon school district to expand services to those households and generate more tax revenue to cover increasing expenses. The library taxing jurisdiction is now limited to Mattoon city limits.
"Our goal is to answer as many questions as possible," said Franklin on the special meeting.
This was considered an efficient way to provide information to the public Franklin has been fielding questions from many residents since the public question was added to the April 7 ballot. Only a handful of residents have attended recent trustee meetings to ask questions.
