Anne Miller

Ogden Rose Library mourns the loss of former librarian Margaret Anne Miller.  Anne died on February 12 at Carle Clinic in Urbana.  A memorial service was held on February 28 at The Ogden Methodist Church.  Anne was the librarian in Ogden for eighteen years.  For the last seven years, she worked at Immanuel Senior Residence in Danville as assistant manager.  She was a resident of Ogden for most of her life.  She was the librarian during the reconstruction of the library following a tornado in 1996.  She brought so many talents to her job, and the community will miss her greatly.  The family requests memorial contributions made to the St. Jude Children’s fund.

Ogden Rose Library "Comcast Newsmakers"

On February 9, 2009, Sandra Wienke, Ogden Rose Librarian, filmed a five minute spot called “Comcast Newsmakers” at Comcast in Champaign, Illinois.  The spot was randomly shown during the CNN Headline News time slot. 

Ms. Wienke said, “I just told them some things we offer at the library, how big the library was, and what was new at the library.”  And that, of course was the wireless.”  Sandra added that as a result many people had come to the library asking about the new wireless network.  She agreed to do the spot to get the word out. The purpose of Comcast Newsmakers is to develop programming for community organizations to share good things happening locally.

Champaign Public Library Honors Robert Shierry

The Champaign Public Library had dedicated a glass-enclosed walkway on the second floor of their new building to the memory of Robert Shierry.  Mr. Shierry served on the library's Board of Trustees for 19 years until he passed away in September 2008.  Among his long history of service to the library, Mr. Shierry was a key force behind the planning and construction of the new building. The walkway, which connects the front fiction reading area to the Internet and Non-fiction areas, is marked with a glass plaque.

William H. Mischo named Kilgor Award recipient

The Library & Information Technology Association (LITA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), has announced the 2009 winner of the  Frederick G. Kilgour Award for Research in Library and Information Technology. 

The winner of the 2009 Kilgour Award is William H. Mischo, head of the Grainger Engineering Library and Information Center at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Library. The Award committee chose William Mischo from a strong field of nominated leaders in library and information technology and praised his three-decades-long work on the design of user-centered information retrieval tools and services. 

Marshall High School Book Club "Skypes"

Skype is a computer program that allows you to make free pc-to-pc voice and video calls.

In January  2009 the Marshall High School Book Club “Skyped” with Ellen Hopkins, award-winning author. Students discussed Crank, one of her best-selling titles; her writing career; and challenges teens face.  Last week they “skyped” with Ned Vizzini author of Its Kind of a Funny Story. The students discussed the book and Mr. Vizzini’s writing career as a young-adult book author, newspaper contributor, and a writer for TV . Mr. Vizzini also gave writing advice to the young aspiring authors at Marshall High School.

Both of these events were huge successes. The students say this is a wonderful opportunity to get the inside scoop on the books and learn what it takes to get a book published. The students also find the personal issues behind the stories inspiring.

This free and easy technology provides a great opportunity for a personal and unforgettable discussion with real live authors.

DeLand-Weldon CUSD #57 - Automation Begins!

On March 24th, Donna Schaal trained the librarian of Deland-Weldon, Tammy Briehler and others from her school district on how to match records and add items in LINC.  Tammy received an LSTA grant to bring her library online with LTLS.  Congratulations, Tammy!

St. Joseph Township - New Contact Information

The St. Joseph Township Library has moved its web site.  The new web address is:  www.stjosephtownshiplibrary.info.  The library's new email address  is [email protected]

The Greening of Lake Land

Lake Land College in Mattoon, IL, is one step closer to becoming Illinois' first self-sustaining college campus. The building that the Lake Land College Library resides is among the list of locations scheduled for renovation and conversion to the geothermal system. Champaign Included on List of America’s “Star Libraries”

The Champaign Public Library earned 3 stars in a new national rating of public libraries, putting it in elite company with just 255 other “star libraries” out of 7,115 that were evaluated.

Library Journal magazine designed the rating system, called the LJ Index of Public Library Service, with an emphasis on library performance. The ratings grouped libraries by budget size and looked at four outputs that reflect public service: checkouts per capita, visits per capita, program attendance per capita and public Internet uses per capita. The top libraries in each budget category were assigned 3- to 5-star ratings, in the spirit of the Michelin travel guides.

Book Club Discusses "The Shack" March 26

The Danville Public Library Book Club will discuss “The Shack” by William Young at its monthly meeting on Thursday, March 26, beginning at 6:30 p.m.  The meeting will be held in the second floor Conference Room of the library.  New readers are always welcome.

Copies of the book may be borrowed through the library’s interlibrary loan service for free or may be purchased at the Checkout Desk of the library through an arrangement with the Village Mall Waldenbooks.
