What is unique about your library?

Our library is located in a residential area. We really feel like we are part of the neighborhood. We do our best to make our library warm and inviting to our patrons, so that it feels more like visiting a friend, than a hushed library. We are kid and family friendly and have seen more and more families coming into the library.

What are the primary goals and objectives of your library?

Our goal is to always serve the public to the best of our ability and make sure their needs are met.  We strive to serve the public through our materials, computers, and programming.

What cooperative efforts are you currently doing?

We work with the schools to help students with projects. We have AR books and can check to see if the test is available. We often do grants with our neighboring libraries. We work closely with the museum, especially with genealogy related information. We have several home school families that we are constantly working with. Anytime we can participate in village-sponsored events in the community, we do.

Tell us a story about your library.

Since we are such a small community, we not only get to know our patrons, but we get to watch them grow. We have children who start coming to the library when they are in pre-school and end up being helpers when they are in high school. It is amazing that we can be a part of their growing and see them come full circle as library patrons.

If money were no object, what services would you add?

We could really use a bigger parking lot. Sometimes, our programs are very popular and there is little space for our patrons to park. It would be nice if we could add a little coffee nook to the library.

What is popular in your library?

Our computers and wifi are heavily used. Our programming is very popular, especially the summer reading program. As far as books, our inspirational section sees the most usage. Our patrons also appreciate being able to request materials through LTLS.

How does your library use online tools to connect to your users?

We do not have a library website, but use Facebook to keep our patrons informed about what is going on in the library.

Free Magazines at St. Joseph Township-Swearingen Memorial Library

The St. Joseph Township-Swearingen Memorial Library is giving away old magazines.  We're cleaning off our shelves making way for the new year.  Come by and pick up copies of older magazines we no longer need.  Take a few...or take a lot.  Great for craft projects or classroom projects.  Give away will last until the magazines are gone or picked through.  Library hours are Mondays & Wednesdays 3-8; Tuesdays & Thursdays 9-6; Fridays 1-7; Saturdays 9-3; closed Sundays.

Through Indian Eyes: Evaluating Books and Media for Stereotypes

The Spurlock Museum, Urbana, is pleased to announce the presentation of the workshop Through Indian Eyes: Evaluating Books and Media for Stereotypes by award-winning storyteller and author Dovie Thomason of the Lakota and Kiowa Apache Nations. The workshop will be held at the Museum from 9-11:30 am on February 5th.

Chocolate Night and Family Literacy Night canceled!

Unfortunately, due to weather and road conditions, Marshall Public Library is canceling Chocolate Night at the Library and Family Literacy Night, both scheduled for this evening, January 20th.

DPL Book Club to Discuss Faulkner Novel Jan. 27

The Danville Public Library Book Club will discuss William Faulkner’s classic novel "As I Lay Dying" on Thursday, January 27, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the second floor Conference Room.  "As I Lay Dying" is considered one of the best of Faulkner's early novels set in Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi, a fictional representation of Lafayette County, Mississippi, where Faulkner was born.  It’s the story of the death of Addie Bundren and her family’s struggles to honor her wish to be buried in another town, beside her parents.  The story unfolds through the eyes of fifteen characters, including Addie herself.  Copies of the book may be borrowed through the library’s interlibrary loan service for free.   New readers are always welcome.

Danville library Teen Space Hosts "Super Bawl" Movie Jan. 25

The Danville Public Library Teen Space invites teens age 12 through 18 to a free showing of "The Blind Side" for its "Super BAWL – Football Movies That Make You Cry" event on Tuesday, January 25.  The film, starring Sandra Bullock, Kathy Bates, and Tim McGraw, will begin at 5 p.m. in the first floor Meeting Room.   Light refreshments and tissues will be provided.  Teen visitors to the Library’s Teen Space on the second floor voted from a list of five movies and selected “The Blind Side”.  The public performance rights for the movie are made possible by a grant from the Danville Library Foundation.
 
The film is the remarkable true story of Michael Oher, a homeless African-American youngster from a broken home.  Michael was taken in by a wealthy white family who helped him fulfill his potential as a person and as an athlete.  He worked hard on the field and in the classroom, became an All-American in college, and was picked in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft, changing his life and the lives of the loving family who were there to watch him succeed.

What is unique about your library?

The Vance Township Library is housed in a building, which is over 100 years old. It was originally built and used as a family residence. Later it was used as a doctor's office, and then a dentist's office. In 1943 it became the home of the Vance Township Library. Visitors are pleasantly surprised to see how much our small library offers to the public and often comments are made about how cozy it is and how it brings back fond memories of their childhood library.

What are the primary goals and objectives of your library?

We strive to serve our community with materials they need and desire.

What cooperative efforts are you currently doing?

The Vance Township Library is one of the seven libraries that make up the East Central Illinois Cooperative. We have worked together on, and received, grants as a cooperative. We also collaborate with two local school districts, labeling all our books, which are on the school's Accelerated Reading lists. We partner with a local church as an outreach to the surrounding communities, sponsoring the Angel Food Ministries. When our local historical society disbanded, many scrapbooks were put together and are now housed in the library.

Tell us a story about your library.

This is a story I'm sure many can relate to, especially small libraries. We are small enough that only one employee is working at the library at any given time, with duties ranging from ordering, processing, carpentry, janitor, Everything! ... Wait, I don't do plumbing or electrical work. Following a recent remodel in our "Tribute Room" one of our adult patrons made a comment about how nice and inviting the room looked with our two comfy chairs near the fireplace. She said that someday soon she would come in and we could sit and read together all day. When I told her I would love for her to do just that, but I could not, she said "What! You're the librarian and you can't sit and read." When I told her this was my workplace and therefore, no, I could not sit and read she replied, "I can't believe you're the librarian and you can't sit and read all day!" After a short pause she then said, "Well then, what DO you do all day?" I guess my duties as a librarian bored her...she was out the door before I could get past duty #5.

If money were no object, what services would you add?

Going online with LINC would be number one on the list if money were no object. Adding more staff would be great, enabling us to provide more programs for our patrons. I would also like to extend our library hours.

What is popular in your library?

Current best selling adult fiction books, particularly suspense seem to be the most popular. Children's books are always popular, as well as magazines, audio CDs and DVDs.

How does your library use online tools to connect to your users?

A website for the library has just been developed:  www.vancetownshiplibrary.shutterfly.com We are currently in the process of cataloging our inventory with OCLC. Our local newspaper encourages us to share all our library news and programs with the community, even publishing pictures I send for the paper. Occasionally a patron will e-mail me with a request, but 95% of the time our patrons just walk into the library or simply use the phone.

Library Patrons Get New Magnifiers

A generous donation to the Danville Library Foundation from Dr. Angelo and Mrs. Alberta Anaclerio is making it possible for vision-challenged readers to check out magnifiers that are stronger than what is commonly found in stores.  Recently, 14 Danville citizens participated in two Magnifier Clinics presented at the Library.  During the clinics, Pam Troxel, Low Vision Coordinator from Chittick Family Eye Care discussed the importance of good light, regular eye exams, and keeping the eyes active.  The Library has hosted several Magnifier Clinics and returning participants were re-evaluated to make sure they were working with the proper magnifier strength.  New participants were tested and appropriate magnifiers are on order to fill their need.

Children's Department Offers Program About Dr. King on jan. 17

The Danville Public Library Children's Department invites children to a program of stories and crafts honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on Monday, January 17, beginning at 2 p.m.  The program is free, and no advance registration is required.

The library is located at 319 N. Vermilion Street.  It is open Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  The library’s website is www.danville.lib.il.us.  Anyone may use the library’s materials and services in the building without a library card.  Persons wishing to borrow library materials must obtain a library card.  The library honors cards from all Illinois public libraries.
