The St. Joseph Township-Swearingen Memorial Library invites you to the first of our special Author Talks this summer. On Saturday, June 4th at 1 p.m., Maureen Holtz, co-author of "Robert Allerton: The Private Man & Public Gifts" will talk about her new book, "Allerton's Paradises". It is a photography book showcasing Robert Allerton's Illinois and Hawaii estates. The author will have copies of the book for sale at the talk.
The photography book, Allerton's Paradises, by author Maureen Holtz and photographer Michael Holtz, showcases the Illinois and Hawaii estates of Robert Allerton. Nearby locations are also included. The project was born after positive response to the biography, Robert Allerton: The Private Man & The Public Gifts by Martha Burgin and Maureen Holtz. This new photography book provides another opportunity for visitors to his estates to see and feel the splendor and serenity that Allerton himself experienced.
Robert Allerton worked over 60 years to mix the beauty of art and landscape on his estates. Michael Holtz’s photos bring everything alive. Among the large collection of Allerton’s Illinois outdoor art are Fu Dogs, a replica of Adam by Auguste Rodin, a casting of The Death of the Last Centaur by Rodin’s student, Émile-Antoine Bourdelle, and the Sun Singer by Carl Milles. The bronze Mermaids on Allerton’s Kauai estate are particularly entrancing.
The text is a short summary of Allerton's life, along with newly-learned information, interspersed with his own words describing his land, life, and frustrations from letters in 1901 to a woman he loved.
The book, published by the News-Gazette, is available at the Red House Gallery (315 W. Washington, Monticello), Prairie Fire Glass in Monticello, and also at the News-Gazette office, through Amazon.com and local C-U bookstores.
