Hear ye! Hear ye! His Royal Majesty King Arthur has issued a Reading Challenge this summer to kids from preschool through age 12 during the "Midsummer Knight’s Read" summer reading program in the Children’s Department. The program will continue through August 20.
King Arthur challenges knights and ladies alike to read 5 books or 200 pages. Each time this milestone is reached, prizes will be awarded.
The Children's Department has planned special free programs during the week as well. They are:
Mondays at 10 a.m. — “Wee Wigglers” preschool story hour
Tuesdays at 10 a.m. — “Dragon Tales”, for all ages
Tuesdays or Wednesdays from 3—5 p.m. — “Project Next Generation” for 5th graders. Sign up for either day to learn how to use computers, scanners, printers, cameras, the Internet and other technologies. Registration required. Sign up in the Children’s Department. Funding for Project Next Generation is provided in part by a grant from Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White.
Thursdays from 4—5 p.m. — PageMasters Book Club for 8 to 12-year-olds. Read Bluestem Books — books voted the best by Illinois kids in grades 3 through 5 — and learn how to prepare a PowerPoint presentation.
Fridays from 2—3 p.m. — Medieval Madness for ages 6 through 12. Learn about all things Medieval through stories, crafts, and movies.
Children who just completed Kindergarten through Fifth Grade can also keep up their reading and learning skills by participating in the Danville District #118 Accelerated Reader program this summer through the Children’s Department. In addition to reading AR books at the library, children can take the AR tests. Three top scorers in each grade will be awarded prizes donated to the school district by Walmart and Danville Mass Transit. K through 5th grade children may obtain an AR star sticker from the Children’s Department. Danville Mass Transit will give K through 5th graders free rides from their home to the library and back home upon presentation of their Danville Public Library card with the sticker on it.
