June 13 – August 20: King Arthur has issued a Reading Challenge this summer to kids from preschool through age 12 to read 5 books or 200 pages during the Danville Public Library’s "Midsummer Knight's Read" program. Each time they reach a milestone, prizes will be awarded. In addition, the Children’s staff has planned regular programs Monday through Friday about knights, ladies, dragons, and other things Medieval. June 29: Danville Public Library’s “Wednesdays at One” film series for teens age 12 – 18 will show “Remember the Titans”, starring Denzel Washington as a football coach hired to work in a recently-desegregated Virginia high school, Will Patton, and Wood Harris. The film will begin at 1 pm, in the 1st floor Meeting Room. The film is based upon real events that occurred in 1971. No registration is required. July 5: “Elester Wilkerson presents”--Local performer and radio personality Elester Wilkerson will appear at the Danville Public Library on Tuesday, July 5, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the first floor Meeting Room. Well-known for his literary interpretations, he will perform some of his favorites: James Weldon Johnson’s Creation; Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven:; Alfred Noyes’ “The Highwayman”; Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s “Wreck of the Hesperus” and selected speeches by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This event is sponsored by the library’s African/Black American Advisory Committee. Mr. Wilkerson appears weekly on “Sunday Morning Ministry” on 105.7 FM.
