June 20: Danville Public Library’s "Monday Matinee" series will feature the film "Invictus," starring Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon as the captain of the South Africa rugby team, at 2 p.m. in the first floor Meeting Room. The program is free. A portion of the refreshments are made possible by a generous donation from the Wolford Apartments, and the public performance rights are made possible by a grant from the Danville Library Foundation.
June 24: From 3 to 5 p.m., Dixon, Illinois, native and Ward Hill Lamon historian Bob O’Connor will talk about Lamon’s manuscript, “The Life of Abraham Lincoln as President,” which O’Connor edited and recently published. Lamon had published his first biography about Lincoln, but died before completing his manuscript about President Lincoln. O’Connor will have copies of his books available for purchase and autographing. He will appear at Lincoln Park during Arts in the Park that weekend.
June 25: The Danville Public Library and Jacqueline Woodard-Smith will hold the second “Pardon Me, Brother” African-American Family History Day on Saturday, June 25, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the second floor Conference Room. Families from Danville’s Black community are encouraged to bring family photos, histories, and memories to the event. Library staff will photocopy the treasures while the families wait. The copies will be added to the library’s collection of local history information about Danville’s Black community. Families who want to share their oral histories will be interviewed by Woodard-Smith. The interviews will be recorded for inclusion in the library’s collection, and a copy will be given to the family. For more information or to sign up, call Leslie Boedicker, Outreach Assistant, at 217-477-5227.
