Join YALSA for 31 Days of Dollars and Sense

This month, the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), will spotlight 31 Days of Dollars and Sense on its blog, http://yalsa.ala.org/blog.

“Librarians across the country are facing dramatic budget and staff cuts, massive strains on resources and facilities and one of the worst job markets we've ever seen, all while our patrons are depending on us more than ever,” said mk Eagle, interim YALSA blog manager. “31 Days of Dollars and Sense is a way for YALSA members to share ideas and strategies as we all struggle with uncertain times. By sharing our collective knowledge YALSA becomes more than the sum of its parts. ”

Topics will include grant writing, programming on a limited budget, where to find free supplies, defending budgets, keeping up morale and more. School and public librarians alike will offer up their own success stories and expertise. YALSA encourages librarians to visit the blog at http://yalsa.ala.org/blog and join the conversation.

Registration now open for YALSA’s winter online courses

The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), will offer two online courses this winter: Booktalks Quick and Simple, taught by Nancy Keane, and Power Programming for Teens, taught by Amy Alessio.

Both classes meet for four weeks and begin in February. To read course descriptions, please visit www.ala.org/yalsa/onlinecourses.

Registration for YALSA’s online courses is available at www.ala.org/yalsa/onlinecourses now through Feb. 5. Four-week courses cost $135 for YALSA members and students, $175 for ALA members and $195 for nonmembers.

YALSA extends deadline to apply to manage new blog

The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), will launch a new blog focused on young adult literature, in 2010. YALSA currently seeks a member manager for the blog. This blog will focus solely on young adult literature and will provide teens with a definitive Web connection to blog posts, images, booklists, videos and more, all related to teen reading. YALSA is currently seeking a member manager for the new blog.

The member manager will lead an advisory board that prepares content for the blog and solicits content from the YALSA community. Full details, including qualifications, duties and honoraria, are available online at http://yalsa.ala.org/blog/2009/09/11/yalsa-seeks-member-manager-for-new-blog. YALSA membership is required for this position. Applicants should provide a cover letter and a resume that includes management, writing, and web publishing experience. Polls close this Friday for YALSA’s Teens’ Top Ten

Teens can voice their choice one last time in the Teens’ Top Ten, a booklist chosen entirely by teens and sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA). Through Sept. 18, teens can vote for their favorite books from the last year in the annual poll at www.ala.org/teenstopten.

The 25 nominees for this year’s Teens’ Top Ten are available at www.ala.org/teenstopten, along with bookmarks, flyers and other promotional tools for librarians to promote voting for the Teens’ Top Ten to the young adults visiting their libraries.

Teens’ Top Ten, an initiative of YALSA’s Young Adult (YA) Galley project, allows teens to voice their choice for their favorite books each year—it’s the only reading list with titles nominated and voted on by teens .Voting takes place through Sept. 18 at www.ala.org/teenstopten. Twenty-five titles from this year and last made the list, which can be viewed at www.ala.org/teenstopten. The final 2009 Teens’ Top Ten list will be announced in a webcast during Teen Read Week, Oct. 18-24, 2009.

YALSA seeks poster presentations for Annual 2010

The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), the fastest-growing division of the American Library Association (ALA), invites proposals for a poster session on exceptional Teen Tech Week™ events, to be held at ALA Annual Conference, Washington, D.C., June 24-29, 2010.

Sponsored by YALSA’s Technology for Young Adults committee, this poster session will highlight successful and innovative library services and programs from Teen Tech Week that integrate technology in a way that is effective, affordable and replicable at other libraries. Poster presentations will highlight the main points or components of your best practice in a way that participants can easily learn about a topic.

“The Teen Tech Week technology poster sessions give librarians the chance to show off their innovative and interesting ideas,” said Linda Braun, YALSA president. “Colleagues who attend the session will walk away with a wealth of great new ideas for future Teen Tech Week programs.”

ALA Great Stories Club

The Great Stories CLUB is organized by the American Library Association Public Programs Office (PPO), in cooperation with the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA). Major funding for the Great Stories CLUB has been provided by Oprah’s Angel Network.

The Great Stories CLUB is a reading and discussion program that targets underserved, troubled teen populations. The program reaches teens through books that are relevant to their lives, inviting them to read and keep the books, and encourages them to consider and discuss each title with a group of their peers.

Funding was provided for this program by Oprah's Angel Network.
